Who are you to judge
Those built different than you or I;
To tell them who to love
Or to take away their rights?
What gives you the right
To decide for everyone else
What a family looks like
Or what's really best for their health?
You speak with wreckless confidence
On feelings you've never known
Dismissive of scholarly findings 1
When they differ from your own
From what dim place have you derived
A diagnosis so crass?
Forgive me, I can't help but think
You're talking out of your... cultural prejudices
Or some place not much better
If I take a closer look
Your most current research on this
Is a several-thousand year old book 2
You assume the moral high ground
At least your posture says a lot;
But there is a broader set of morals
Of which you say little or naught
Where's your moral outrage
On the pollution of the earth? 3
Or where's your condemnation
For avoidable wars between nations?
When millions of people still suffer
From all types of preventable disease
Have you nothing to say on a system
That puts profits before people's needs?
When some inherit exorbitant wealth
Others fall victim to starvation
In a world that has so much, I ask
"Where's your moral indignation?"
Since when are we disciples
Of an ancient priestly cult 4
Who put ritual observance and piety 5
Above the continual improvement of society?
Do we follow the teachings of the one we praise 6
The Jewish peasant from Galilee;
Who summed up the Law with one simple phrase
"Do unto others what you would have them do to thee."
